Inkster council authorizes MDOT sidewalk agreement, speed-bump replacements and a water-main resolution

The Inkster City Council on June 16 authorized multiple public-works actions intended to improve pedestrian infrastructure and system redundancy.
Council voted to let the Department of Public Services enter an agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to secure funding for the 2025 sidewalk project and adopted the included resolution. Staff said the project will address grant-defined areas (noted in the meeting as Cherry Hill to Central and Meadowbelt to Avondale) and acknowledged resident concerns about prioritizing severely damaged sidewalks. A councilmember asked whether locations could be prioritized earlier if they create a safety risk; staff replied the work must stay within the grant boundaries and that they would provide a written response on specific site timing.
Separately, council authorized the Department of Public Services to reinstall previously located speed bumps and replace damaged ones for roughly $40,000. Councilmembers discussed whether to pick up the speed bumps early to avoid issues and whether doing so would comply with an existing federal grant; staff said they would review the grant agreement and suggested an October pickup could be possible if administratively appropriate.
Council also adopted a resolution to install a new water main on Wayne County property to provide redundancy in the water distribution system; the clerk read the resolution and council approved it by voice vote.

What happens next: Staff will check grant compliance for the speed-bump timing and prepare written responses on sidewalk and water-structure questions for residents; project schedules will be coordinated through DPS and posted as appropriate.
