Inkster Council Approves Event Permits, Garbage Contract Extension and Lists Rezoning for First Reading

At its June 2 meeting the Inkster City Council approved several routine event permits and a one-year contract extension for curbside garbage service, and recorded planning commission rezoning recommendations as first-reading items.
Events and permits: The council approved the Princeton block party for July 12, 2025 (3 p.m.–10 p.m.) with designated street closures and authorized the Inkster Vikings all-class picnic July 25–27, 2025 at the former Inkster High School lot (3250 Middlebelt Road) with stated daily hours.
Curbside garbage contract: The council authorized the administration to extend the city’s contract with Priority Waste for one year at a new rate of $14.50 per household per month, up from the current $11.82. City staff explained GFL (the prior hauler) ceased operations July 1, 2024, and Priority Waste has been the contractor for approximately 10 months; staff said the extension gives the city a full year to evaluate service performance after last year’s disruptions.
Rezoning: On first reading the council considered planning commission recommendations to rezone a set of parcels: 60 parcels from M-1 (Light Industrial) to R-1B (One-Family Residential) in the Dunning area, 49 parcels from M-1 to RM (Restricted Multiple Dwelling Low) in the Cherry Harrison area, and five parcels from R-1B to PUD (Planned Unit Development) in the Parkwood/Henry Ruff area. The items were announced for first reading and will return for additional consideration.
Other approvals: Council also agreed to send representatives to a June 23 joint legislative presentation of the Safe Streets for All Unified Action Plan at Westland City Hall and approved an added employment-matter item for 'Myers' by voice vote.
What happens next: The contract extension is effective for one year while staff monitor Priority Waste’s service and the city schedules subsequent rezoning hearings and ordinance readings as required by municipal procedure.
