Representatives of the American Legion appeared at the Oct. 10 Inkster City Council meeting to present a short program marking the 50th commemoration of the Vietnam era. The group played a two-minute excerpt from President Barack Obama’s 2012 speech recognizing Vietnam as a war and honoring veterans' service.
An American Legion representative framed the program: "This speech took place in 2012... President Obama was the first United States president to recognize Vietnam as a war..." The ceremony proceeded with the presentation of lapel pins and certificates recognizing honorable service during the Vietnam era. The Legion representatives named the veterans to be honored: Oliver Gabriel Henderson, Samuel Rose and Clyde John Miller Jr.; a named Navy veteran, George Williams, was noted as not present.
Chaplain Norm Soli and other Legion officers performed the pinning and read the recognition statements; the mayor participated in presenting the pins. The Legion also provided tabletop American flags and small envelopes for recipients. American Legion presenters described the program as a shortened ceremony to respect meeting time but emphasized the intention to honor local veterans for their service.
Ending: The council and audience offered thanks and appreciation for the veterans' service; the American Legion organizers provided materials to deliver to an absent veteran.
