DOVER, Del. — The Delaware House on Tuesday unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 85 to rename its Legislative Fellows Program in honor of the late Dr. Jerome R. Lewis, a longtime educator and mentor to generations of public servants.
Representative Romer, who sponsored the resolution, told colleagues the program "was initiated in 1982" with the University of Delaware and that "nearly 400 Legislative Fellows have walked these halls" under Lewis's leadership. "His legacy lives on through the students he inspired," Romer said as family members of Dr. Lewis sat in the chamber.
Eric Hastings, director of legislative affairs for the House Majority and a former fellow, recalled Lewis's personal mentorship and urged the new fellows in the gallery to "use this public service thing a shot." Hastings said Lewis taught fellows to belong and to "dare to care about others."
The resolution recognizes Lewis's role in creating a sustained fellowship program and expresses the chamber's gratitude to his family. Representative Wilson Anton and other current and former fellows offered tributes on the House floor.
The measure passed by voice vote and was recorded as passed by the House. The resolution directs no new appropriation; it is a ceremonial renaming and recognition of Lewis's contributions.
The House recessed after completing additional business and will reconvene Wednesday for further consideration of pending legislation.
