The Framingham Zoning Board of Appeals approved a finding on Jan. 14 allowing an expanded front porch at 1349 Old Worcester Road that extends into an existing nonconforming front‑yard setback.
Architect Kent Duckham described the proposal as an enlargement of an existing stoop to a 10‑by‑22 covered porch to create a usable front seating area and encourage neighborly interaction. The building department had previously denied the proposal as presented and the matter was advertised as a variance in case that determination was needed, but the chair and members concluded the request qualifies as a finding for alteration of a preexisting nonconforming structure. The board noted the Conservation Commission had approved the project.
One member praised front porches as contributing to neighborhood social fabric, and the board voted to approve the finding as presented. The decision was recorded and the applicant was advised to obtain the necessary building permits and follow any ConCom conditions.
