Council discussed a proposal to pursue a hotel feasibility study and develop marketing materials intended to attract hotel operators to Sandy.
John said hotels and major operators typically conduct multi-year due diligence before committing to new sites and recommended preparing a concise prospectus and attending industry conferences to pitch Sandy as a base-camp for Mount Hood visitors. "Due diligence starts, like, 4 years out for a hotel," John said, noting that outreach and brochure materials help signal market readiness to chains and independent operators.
Council members cited limited existing room capacity (the city’s Best Western was referenced as a 40-room property) and said additional rooms and event space would help capture visitors and meeting business that now stay farther away. Members favored placing a hotel site near downtown where guests could walk to restaurants and shops.
What’s next: staff was asked to scope a market study and a marketing brochure and to return with a recommended approach for outreach to hotel developers and operators.
