Commissioner Emily Claus opened the discussion by urging caution. In a prepared memorandum she said a county-level AI surveillance ordinance could be premature while state legislation is pending and raised specific concerns about a proposed MOU. Claus noted the 2009 MOU language required immediate deletion of data the sheriff’s office did not need; she said that requirement is missing in the newer draft and worried the new agreement could allow sharing data that had been subjected to AI processing.
Claus pressed for the auditor-camera item to be delayed or moved to department items, saying the cameras — funded through a DOJ grant — could result in federal access to sensitive data. "I would ask ... to remove it…
