Council Withdraws Two Consent Items for Follow-up; Announces Transit Board Vacancies

At the start of the Aug. 26 meeting the Birmingham City Council removed two items from the consent agenda for follow-up. A resident asked to remove item 13 (a property abatement item) saying the lot had already been maintained; city staff said code enforcement will investigate and get in touch with the resident. Council staff agreed to withdraw the item from the consent grouping so the matter could be resolved outside the consent vote.
Separately, a parcel referenced under item 21 was withdrawn after staff requested additional discussion; if needed the parcel will return to the agenda next week. Councilors asked for clarity on how the city determines which overgrown lots are placed on emergency abatement lists and requested a shareable list so they can advise constituents.
Councilor Abbott asked about item 40 and its funding mechanism after staff said up to $15,000 could be contributed from multiple council accounts into a departmental account to support AG Gaston (transcript includes variant spellings). Abbott described the approach as “peculiar” but did not move to remove the item from consent.
The council also announced vacancies on the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority board and solicited applications by Sept. 3, 2025. With those removals and announcements addressed, the remaining consent items were approved by voice vote.
