The Pierce County Council adopted an update to the county’s Sustainability 2030 greenhouse gas reduction and resilience plan, adding 24 new actions to guide conservation, resilience, clean transportation, building efficiency and equity efforts.
Mike Krueger, principal policy analyst, summarized the 2025 update and said the county is pursuing a goal to reduce countywide and county‑government greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030 from a 2015 baseline. The update organizes actions into community‑wide and internal county focus areas, identifies lead departments, and includes a new whale‑recovery action item that was added in committee.
Krueger told the council the update includes 24 new actions and that, as of June 2025, 21 items adopted in the 2023 update were complete; 33 actions show significant progress and five had not yet started. He noted the proposal carries a $2,663,000 fiscal impact over the coming biennium. After committee review and limited public comment, the council passed the ordinance 4–3.
Council discussion recognized ongoing implementation work and the department’s use of best available science, while dissenting members urged a cautious fiscal approach and questioned assumptions about feasibility and funding. The ordinance was adopted as presented and will be implemented by the departments identified in the plan.
