Members of the Bike & Ped Fact Finding Committee told the Parks Commission on Nov. 20 that the 30% Front Street designs represent a reasonable step given site constraints, but that existing railroad infrastructure and buildings create bottlenecks for continuous bike lanes.
BPFFC members said the 30% drawings show areas where bicycle lanes must shift across the street because of constrained right-of-way. Committee members recommended the design proceed to 60% for a stage where substantive changes are appropriate and suggested outreach to the port to determine whether rail realignment is plausible in the future.
Staff explained the typical design progression (30%, 60%, 100%), noted the public comment period occurred during a prior blueprint phase and said most detailed design changes occur at 60%. Commissioners raised questions about bike parking and suggested small adjustments such as replacing one parking space with bike racks where feasible.
The commission did not take formal action but supported the committee’s feedback and directed staff to continue the design sequence toward 60% and 90/100% milestones.
