Coos Bay council approves $100,000 feasibility study for East Side housing site

The Coos Bay City Council voted to award a $100,000 feasibility study contract to AKS Engineering and Forestry LLC to evaluate infrastructure improvements needed to support residential development on a 78.5-acre undeveloped site on the city's East Side.
Jennifer, a city staff member, said the city partnered with the Port of Coos Bay and secured a $100,000 grant through Business Oregon to fund the planning work. She told the council four proposals were received and a review committee of city and port staff recommended AKS based on scope and similar project experience.
A councilor moved to award the study to AKS for an amount not to exceed $100,000; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Councilors praised the city–port collaboration. One councilor said the award "is one of our goals, collaboration, and here's a perfect example of how that works," thanking city and port staff for their work. The property under study is owned by the Port of Coos Bay and is just north of the East Side boat ramp, Jennifer said.
The feasibility study will evaluate infrastructure needs — such as roads, utilities and other improvements — required before any residential development proceeds. The council did not adopt a development plan tonight; the vote authorized the planning contract and use of the grant funds to complete the feasibility analysis.
