Volunteer group OBAB reports increased local activity; appreciation event planned Nov. 8

Katie Loy, treasurer of OBAB, presented the organization's 2025 activity report to the Coos Bay Parks Commission, highlighting volunteer contributions and upcoming outreach.
Loy said OBAB recorded 334 volunteers citywide who collectively contributed 835 hours this year. In Coos Bay alone OBAB had 235 volunteers who worked 587.5 hours; volunteers removed roughly 51.5 cubic yards of trash, 24 cubic yards of invasive vegetation such as English ivy and Scotch broom, and spread about 5 cubic yards of mulch on trails.
Loy announced a volunteer appreciation event set for Nov. 8 at the Coos Bay Library and said she would send event details to city staff for distribution. She asked commissioners and staff to help recruit volunteers and potential board members. "That's a great way to connect with us and talk," Loy said, adding that recognition helps retain long-term volunteers.
Commissioners thanked OBAB for its work and encouraged staff cooperation; several commissioners noted the organization's volunteer turnout despite a reduced number of cleanup events in Coos Bay this year compared with last year.
The commission did not take formal action on the report but welcomed further collaboration and promotion of volunteer events.
