Committee selects replacement trees for Northside Park, Sankey Phase 3 bids moving forward

Park staff told the Park and Tree Committee on Oct. 15 that plans are advancing for tree replacements at Northside Park and that work on Sankey Park Phase 3 is progressing through the bidding stage.
For Northside Park, staff said vouchers are available at Garland Nursery and recommended planting two maple varieties (contrasting fall colors) to replace elms, with a Tuscarora crepe myrtle proposed as a replacement for a dogwood that did not survive at Sankey. Staff also noted a donated native white oak from an Arbor Day event as another candidate for planting. To aid establishment, staff plan to use tree-watering bags and emphasized winter planting to improve survival odds.
On Sankey Park Phase 3, parks staff said contractors attended a pre-bid walk of the trail system and that the team staked a bandstand footprint with input from a local Timber Framers Guild contact. Staff will upload contractors’ questions and the attendance list to the bid page and will await architect revisions before advancing procurement.
Committee members asked about handling and transport for larger nursery pots and confirmed that tree size and handling logistics (trailer use, integrated drip-staging at the nursery) will be considered in procurement and planting plans. No formal vote or contract award occurred at the meeting; staff will return with vendor selections and procurement timelines.
