During the Nov. 17 meeting, David Smith, who identified himself as "first vice" of his post, asked, "Who's gonna do the honor guard?" The presiding officer responded that the American Legion had been designated to organize this year's ceremony and that the organization taking charge must provide the guest speaker, honor guard, emcee and chaplain.
Commission members described how responsibilities are typically assigned among veterans service organizations. One member explained the difference between a joint color guard (made up of flags from multiple VSOs) and an honor guard (the team that fires the rifle salute and plays taps). A participant urged groups that are short-staffed to request assistance; an unidentified speaker said, "If you need one, ask and one of the other teams would step up."
The commission agreed to follow up after the meeting to confirm which unit will provide the honor guard for the Kreckle Center ceremony and to coordinate officers and other volunteers.
Next steps: organizers agreed to contact Post 388 and other veteran organizations to confirm assignments and logistics ahead of the Dec. 7 ceremony.
