Select Board approves reader services librarian classification and job description

The Select Board voted unanimously to approve a Reader Services Librarian job description and to reclassify the existing circulation supervisor position to grade N17.
Library Director Kate Caraccio explained the change responds to evolving library needs: the position will manage circulation (checkouts), readers’ advisory, outreach, programming and supervisory responsibilities for circulation operations. The previous incumbent who served as circulation supervisor had Master's level credentials; the reclassification aims to make the position consistent with other professional librarian roles and better match duties. Caraccio said the reclassification is budget neutral for FY26 because of overlap in steps within the union step system.
Sean (Select Board member) moved the motion and a board member seconded; the board voted unanimously in favor of the job description and classification change and to reduce the authorized circulation supervisor count from one to zero.
Ending: Staff will proceed with the classification change and negotiated changes through the bargaining process as required by the union contract and will return with any implementation details if necessary.
