Sheriff reports county jail stats and asks to retire K9 Zeno; board approves retirement

Sheriff Ed Schroeder delivered the sheriff’s department monthly report and asked the board to approve the retirement of K9 Zeno.

In his report Schroeder recited jail and patrol metrics recorded for the period: a booking count of 105, and what was read in the transcript as "served 18,212 meals" (as presented by the sheriff). He summarized patrol activity including warnings, traffic arrests, OWIs, criminal arrests, vehicle miles for transport and patrol, and crash/incident counts, and described narcotics task force and school resource officer activity.

Schroeder read a memo requesting that K9 Zeno be retired and removed from county assets. He said Zeno was born on 05/21/2015 (the transcript references the Netherlands as origin and training at Devon Lick Kennels), served for approximately eight years, and was trained in narcotics detection and apprehension/ tracking duties. Deputy Preston, present but not speaking at length, agreed to assume full liability and the cost of care for Zeno after retirement.

A commissioner moved to approve retiring K9 Zeno and transferring him to Deputy Preston’s care; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.

The transcript contains multiple references to the canine’s name (Zeno) and one apparent transcription instance of a different spelling (Xena); the sheriff consistently referred to the dog as Zeno in the reading. The board approved the retirement and the transfer of the dog to Deputy Preston.
