House adopts resolutions setting MLK observance and State of the State schedule, including Feb. 2 State of the State date

The Tennessee House adopted two procedural joint resolutions on Jan. 13, 2026. Leader Lambert moved suspension of the rules and adoption of House Joint Resolution 741, which provides for a recess and observance related to Martin Luther King Jr. That resolution passed "the ayes have it" and was declared adopted without objection.
Leader Lambert then moved adoption of House Joint Resolution 742 to call a joint convention of the Senate and House for the purpose of hearing a State of the State address by Governor Bill Lee and to authorize transmittal of the budget document and implementing legislation for fiscal year 2026–27. Leader Lambert told members the State of the State would occur on Feb. 2; members would receive budget books on that day; budget language would be due Feb. 5; and the proposed budget would be filed by Feb. 9. The House adopted HJR 742 without objection.
Both resolutions were processed under suspension of the rules and placed on the record for immediate introduction and consideration. The actions set the chamber’s calendar for the governor’s address and associated budget deadlines, but do not themselves enact budgetary policy.
