Cass County highway report: Ag Park road done, US 35 bridge remains closed until spring

Cass County's highway representative reported key winter and infrastructure updates, including completion of a major Ag Park road project and an extended closure of a county bridge.

Jeff told the board the 300 South and 400 West project at the Ag Park is "substantially complete," with the rail crossing reconstruction the only remaining element and a final closeout expected in the spring. He said the road is open but some shoulder and seeding work may be required.

Jeff reviewed two recent snow events, saying the first occurred on Nov. 10 and a larger storm over a weekend generated roughly 400 overtime man-hours for county crews. He said the county placed its road salt order that morning and reported, in the meeting record, "It came in at 7,403 a ton with Morton salt under the state QPA." The figure was stated on the record and is presented here as quoted; the county did not provide additional pricing context in the meeting transcript.

On closures, Jeff said the only long-term road closure in the county is the US 35 bridge over Deer Creek at Galveston and noted it is expected to remain closed until spring because of construction complications. He added that local detour routes prohibit trucks and that enforcement has been taking place by Galveston Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff's Department.

Commissioners opened numerous 2026 annual bids for aggregates, fuels, culvert and bridge materials, asphalt and other highway supplies; staff collected packets and the board moved to take the bids under advisement for later review.
