Senate adopts resolution urging civility in legislative discourse amid election-year tensions

The Delaware Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 124, a measure ‘‘advancing civility and strengthening discourse in the Delaware General Assembly,’’ after senators from both parties described threats to public servants and the need to lower political temperature during the 2026 election cycle.
Sponsor Senator Hoffman said civility is ‘‘necessary for our democracy’’ and asked senators to begin with self-reflection; several colleagues asked to be added as co-sponsors. Senator Betsy Jones (Patty John in transcript) and others emphasized that while strong policy debates are appropriate, personal attacks and threats are unacceptable. The secretary announced a roll call result of 21 yes, and the resolution was declared passed.
The resolution is symbolic: senators described it as a reaffirmation of chamber norms and an attempt to model respectful engagement ahead of local and state elections.
