Sherwood outlines short-term SNAP supports, food pantry partnerships

City Manager Craig Sheldon told the Sherwood City Council on Nov. 4 that the city is stepping up short-term supports for residents affected by recent SNAP benefit changes.
Sheldon said the city is partnering with local food pantries — Sherwood YMCA (open Wednesdays, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.), St. Francis (Wednesdays and Thursdays, various hours), Helping Hands (third Saturday each month) and Willowbrook (Tuesdays) — and providing "some financial support for the next month" to help cover refrigeration and distribution needs. "Sherwood YMCA has a food pantry. It's open Wednesday from 10AM to 12PM, and I wanna let you know the city is partnering with them on this," Sheldon said.
The city will offer direct utility billing support to residential customers who can present a SNAP card and a driver's license. Sheldon also announced the senior center will start offering an oatmeal breakfast beginning Monday, Nov. 10, from 9–10 a.m., and that take-home senior meals will be available on Friday afternoons. He said the city is adding about an hour each day for one part-time staff member to support the senior program.
Council members thanked staff for the rapid coordination. One councilor asked whether the sharps collection box installation tied to a recent IGA would happen soon; staff estimated the installation would occur in about six weeks from the IGA start date (the IGA begins Nov. 15).
What happens next: City staff said they will post resource information on social media and the city website and will continue coordinating with community partners to meet immediate needs until SNAP benefits are restored.
