The Mitchell County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt Budget Amendment No. 2 for the 2025–26 fiscal year, increasing county appropriations by a little more than $2,000,000 and bringing the total annual budget to $30,500,000.
Finance staff told commissioners the largest component of the amendment is funding for a newly created county-operated EMS department, personnel costs of which began in mid-December when staff came on board. “We have started paying those folks,” the finance officer said, and the amendment adds the necessary staffing and operating appropriations.
Staff also explained the amendment creates two new funds to hold the recently approved emergency-management grants so those monies are segregated and not commingled with the county’s general fund, which is a typical requirement for state and federal awards.
Commissioners moved and the board approved the amendment by voice vote. No roll-call vote or individual tallies were recorded in the transcript.
The finance officer offered to answer questions and confirmed staff expects to remain on the standard timeline for next year’s budget discussions. The county manager and finance department will manage implementation and return to the board if additional appropriation changes are required for capital work or equipment purchases related to the grants.
