Commissioners agree to join Indiana 15 coalition for EPA Brownfields grant

Perry County commissioners approved a request from the Indiana 15 Regional Planning Commission to include Perry County as a non-lead coalition member in an upcoming EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant application.
Nathan Held of the Indiana 15 Regional Planning Commission told commissioners the grant funds Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments for potentially redevelopable sites. Held said the coalition application requires letters of support from participating counties but does not require a direct financial contribution from the county: “So what we're here tonight is to ask if Perry County would like to be a coalition member for this round of funding,” he said. He noted the 2023 award to the coalition was $500,000 and that Perry County received about $108,000 in assessment work during the prior grant cycle.
Commissioners discussed the request briefly and approved a motion to provide a letter of support. County staff and the auditor clarified that the county would not be committing funds as a coalition member and would instead assist by identifying candidate sites within the county if the grant is awarded.
The authorization was made by voice vote; commissioners also confirmed that the county has already provided a letter to the applicant and that outreach to county staff will continue if the grant is funded.
