Erie partners with Mile High Flood District to study Prince Lake tributary drainage

The Erie Town Council approved a partnership with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD) to develop a comprehensive design for drainage and flood-control improvements in the Prince Lake tributary area near 100 11th and Arapahoe Road.
Public Works staff said the plan will take about a year to produce alternatives, conduct public outreach and develop construction estimates. "We'll be looking at other alternatives," Public Works Director David Passak said, noting a previously contemplated option in the town’s Outfall Systems Plan was no longer viable.
Wendy Palmer, project manager and liaison with MHFD, said the design-phase work may require moving a trail or expanding a detention pond and that the town and MHFD have placeholder funds in their five-year plans. Council member questions focused on whether the study will account for potential future drainage from nearby development; staff said the modeling would consider the whole tributary and all contributing areas. Transcript remarks show design-phase funding of $300,000, with half expected to be paid by the town and half by MHFD for the design effort; whether MHFD or the town will share construction costs must be decided after the design and require board approvals.
Council approved resolution 25-080 to proceed with the MHFD agreement; staff emphasized the next steps include selecting a consultant, detailed analysis, public outreach and budgeting for construction in a future process.
