The Indiana House Committee on Public Policy on an unspecified date approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 8 condemning religious persecution worldwide and directing copies be transmitted to the state’s congressional delegation and the U.S. State Department.
The resolution, presented to the committee by Representative Layman, cites the International Religious Freedom Act and notes a 2024 U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom report that lists 17 countries as “countries of particular concern” and additional countries on a special watch list. Representative Layman said the measure signals that “as Hoosiers, we are concerned about freedom of religion.”
Carol Auslander of Torchbearer Public Affairs, representing the Jewish Community Relations Council, testified in support and thanked Layman for sponsoring the measure. Auslander said the Jewish community has seen rising antisemitism in countries including France, Poland and Germany and cited a worldwide survey indicating widespread antisemitic views. “This resolution sends an important message,” Auslander said.
Committee members moved to pass the resolution, and the roll call showed unanimous approval in committee. Chairman Manning called the roll; the measure passed 11-0.
The resolution contains no regulatory requirements; it is a formal statement of concern and a request that copies be sent to the federal delegation and relevant federal agencies for awareness. No amendments to the resolution were recorded in committee.
