Senator Cook urged the committee to adopt House Concurrent Resolution 8 to rename the section of State Road 56 near French Lick for Vern Irvin, a World War II veteran and longtime local police chief who was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance on Sept. 10, 1972.
The renaming is intended to honor Irvin’s service and to remind the public of the risks law enforcement officers face. “It's our hope that the renaming of State Road 56 near French Lick serves as a reminder of Chief Irvin's sacrifice to his community as well as a sacrifice that those in blue make each and every day to keep us safe,” Senator Cook said.
Committee members had no public testimony on the resolution. After a motion and second, the committee called the roll and approved the resolution by voice and recorded vote. The measure passed 9-0.
The committee did not record a mover or seconder on the transcript. No amendments or conditions were stated. The resolution asks the Indiana Department of Transportation to implement the renaming of the specified portion of State Road 56 in the vicinity of French Lick.
