Police department completes major software upgrade; council asks about e-bike sidewalk rules

The chief said the new system will allow sector-level data reporting for community meetings and will produce more regionalized crime and activity statistics once migration is complete. Background checks for two candidates are advancing and remain on schedule.
Councilors asked whether fast electric bikes (e-bikes) should be allowed on sidewalks. Chief Patel said high-speed devices may need to be treated like motorcycles and use the roadway; he suggested waiting for statutes and further research but said enforcement could reflect device speed and operation.
No formal votes were taken. Staff will continue to work through software issues and monitor policy implications for mobility devices.
