Board discusses new crosswalk signal and spring rollout for mobile speed cameras

Board members discussed several traffic‑safety items including a new crosswalk signal at Trimble and Sunset and details about the city's planned use of mobile speed enforcement cameras.

Traffic update: Speakers described the Trimble/Sunset installation as a "locked" signal that will remain dark unless activated for a pedestrian crossing; when activated it will display a solid red then a flashing red mode (functioning as a stop) and then go dark when inactive. Board members agreed an educational campaign will be needed to teach drivers how to respond to the new signal once it is live.

Mobile speed enforcement: A department representative said the city council recently approved two leased mobile speed cameras. The cameras will be deployable for a minimum of 30 days in a given location, and the city plans a 30‑day grace period educational campaign when the cameras are first used. "They'll be able to be utilized in school zones and or residentials," the representative said. Procurement timing discussed in the meeting points to an April deployment after a 90‑day procurement window.

Signage and legal note: Board members said legislation requires signage in advance of camera locations; the meeting cited a 400‑foot signage requirement prior to camera locations. The department also noted existing data sources (Urban SDK) that show traffic volumes on Sunset and Oregon and discussed that many citations from fixed cameras previously went to nonlocal drivers.

Next steps: Staff will coordinate an education outreach and signage plan before cameras begin issuing citations, and the Traffic Safety Board will continue to adjust placement strategies based on observed traffic patterns and community input.
