Resident presents 21-signature petition opposing required engineering for outbuildings

At the Genola public forum, resident Corinne Maynard urged the council not to adopt required engineering reviews for outbuildings, res-check engineering and soil compaction studies. "Every single person I spoke to, I have 21 signatures, against required engineering of outbuildings, required res checks of new builds and required soil compaction studies," she said, urging the council to involve affected residents in any policy change.
The mayor responded that the building inspector had presented recommendations to the planning commission, which discussed and approved something the mayor had not yet seen, and that the council has not voted on and will not address the issue until the inspector can explain the applicable laws and rationale. "We have yet to vote on it... Until he can do that, I don't anticipate that we're going to even address the issue," the mayor said.
Councilmembers noted the planning commission was not unanimous in favor of the change and expressed mixed feelings about imposing new engineering requirements in an agricultural community. One councilmember suggested more work is required before specifying what would be required.
The council did not act on the proposal at the meeting. The mayor said the subject will return only after staff can present clear legal and technical justification and after opportunities for public input.
