Cleveland council approves routine business, discusses cemetery policy and community events

The Cleveland Town Council used its Jan. 8 meeting to clear routine items and discuss several community programs.
Council approved the annual rental lease for the organization referenced as "Forbidden Fruit / Katie's labor," agreeing to renew the same contract as the prior year. Members also moved and passed payment of the townbills by roll call.
On cemetery policy, staff said the online policy will state permitted vault types (concrete or PSV) and recommended adding metal markers on vault corners to aid future location with metal detectors. Staff will update the policy to include a liability clause making the town not responsible for digging-related damage.
Council set planning-meeting timing to precede regular council sessions at 6:00 p.m., and discussed dates for the Easter egg hunt (proposed March 28) and a tree-lighting event in late November or early December. Members also discussed improving outreach (flyers, possible text alerts) and adjusting the Angel Tree nomination process to reach seniors and other families less likely to be helped by existing programs.
Staff briefed council on a recent Natural Resources Conservation Service presentation about erosion and funding for residents along a local wash; members asked staff to clarify jurisdictional responsibilities and program eligibility. Councilors also identified the town ordinance book as needing compilation and clearer numbering for amendments and resolutions.
The meeting ended after the council tabled a separate property-compliance item and agreed to reconvene the matter next month with counsel and additional records.
