Mendon council hears progress and rising costs on Legacy Park and Public Works shop

Council received a multi-part update on Legacy Park and the city’s Public Works building and city shop projects.
Engineer Eric provided a cost breakdown of recent change orders and construction items: moving a window, heating-unit price increases, added columns/piers, a 20x60 lean-to, concrete work, and additional electrical outlets. He reported change orders and related items that raised the project total into the multiple tens of thousands above original line items and listed interim totals; council and staff agreed to check last year’s payments to see how much had already been paid and to present exact remaining budget figures at the next meeting.
On Legacy Park, contractor-installed light poles are in place though light heads remain to be installed; curb and gutter work is near completion and paving is planned if weather permits. Staff noted a partial cost trade—contractor absorbed some sidewalk reduction costs while other items required change orders.
Council asked about particular change-order items such as an ADA ramp removal and potential alternatives, and discussed options to reallocate budget lines. Mayor and council agreed to open the budget in January and to consider shifting funds if needed to cover up to several thousand dollars identified for items such as a buried propane tank for the trailhead and final Public Works site work.
What’s next: staff will: reconcile amounts paid in the prior fiscal year and identify the remaining current-year exposure; present recommended budget adjustments at the January meeting; and proceed with finishing park and shop work provided weather and budget adjustments allow.
