North Ogden library update: roof repairs, fiber run and fire marshal signoff delay public opening
Summary
Library staff told the board that leaks discovered during heavy rain require parapet removal and a full roof replacement; the library's public opening remains contingent on fiber installation and fire marshal occupancy approval, likely weeks away.

Trent Bateman told the North Ogden City Library Board on Jan. 8 that recent heavy rains exposed multiple roof leaks and missing vapor barriers in the building's brick, prompting plans to remove parapets and replace the roof as part of the ongoing renovation. "During with all that rain, we found a lot of leaks," Bateman said, adding that "they're gonna rip it off" and install an all-new roof.
Bateman said staff have moved books, been cleaning and repairing materials, and that furniture will begin arriving in January, but the library cannot open to the public until the fiber is pulled to the new room and the fire marshal grants occupancy. "They're waiting for fire alarms to be activated and a few other pieces, and they can't be activated until the fiber is pulled from our room all the way over there," Bateman said, noting the conduit was just finished and that an outside contractor, Les Olsen, must be scheduled to complete the fiber run. "I'm guessing it's we're still another 2 weeks out on that."
Board members and staff described interim steps: using pages for janitorial and book-repair tasks, staging the first wave of furniture in January and preparing a program calendar for a hoped-for February start of programming. Bateman emphasized safety measures while the space remains closed to browsing, citing narrow aisles from stacked materials and the need to prevent children from climbing on temporary shelving.
Next steps: staff will schedule the fiber contractor, coordinate final inspections with the fire marshal and continue staging furniture and programming plans. The board invited members to tour the renovated space after the meeting.
