Cell-tower agreement will raise municipal internet speed and cut telecom costs, Fountain Green officials say

Fountain Green officials updated the council Nov. 20 on cell-tower activity and a related services agreement that will raise internet speeds at city facilities and lower monthly telecom costs.
Staff reported that a pad for a new tower has been poured and a T-Mobile mount is planned; centre tower infrastructure is already present on the upper water tank. The mayor said the city's first payment from the new tower contact appeared this month. In separate discussions with CentreCom leadership, staff negotiated an agreement in which CentreCom will increase city-building internet speed to 1 gig and cover the costs for phone and internet services for the municipal building; only the voicemail component remains the city's responsibility. The new arrangement is expected to significantly reduce the current monthly telecom bill.
Officials said CentreCom also agreed that future upgrades CentreCom makes to their network will prompt corresponding upgrades at city facilities. Staff will review the final contract and bring it back to the council for signature and any necessary authorizations.
Council members noted the potential ongoing revenue stream and service benefit, and asked staff to confirm exact monthly credit and to verify whether other providers (AT&T, Verizon) may later seek co-location on the new tower.
