Forest Service and Garfield County discuss shared stewardship, trail priorities, and burn/timber plans

Forest Service representatives described a salvage sale (approximately 250 acres) expected to be ready in January and said they are coordinating archaeological and survey requirements. The acting district ranger noted staffing constraints and the need to prioritize where limited crews and heavy equipment will be used. The Forest Service said an agreement with American Conservation Experience and Great American Outdoors funding could provide roughly $800,000 to help with trail maintenance work forest-wide.
Commissioners pressed for a standing coordination meeting across county and Forest Service leadership to avoid conflicting priorities and to ensure local priorities (for example, trail reroutes and culvert repairs) receive timely attention. County leaders also discussed alternative handling of slash piles and a pilot biochar operation that would convert woody material to char, reducing smoke from open-pile burning.
The Forest Service and county agreed to meet, share priority lists and explore using contractors where needed; the Forest Service said it will continue advancing the salvage sale and assess opportunities to expand acreage if initial sales proceed smoothly.
What happens next County and Forest Service staff will convene a coordination meeting to align priorities and identify contractors/equipment needs; the Forest Service expects to advertise the salvage sale in January and will follow required NEPA, survey and archaeological review steps.
