Wallsburg council members used part of the May 15 work meeting to map out park and facilities needs ahead of summer events and the July 24 celebration.
Councilors reported removal of an older, unsafe playground fixture (the "bumblebee") and confirmed park bathrooms are functional after recent repairs. Members discussed replacing a failed freezer used during summer events and debated upright versus chest replacements for convenience and longevity. Volunteers and local youth service groups were proposed as possible labor sources for minor repairs such as replacing warped boards on picnic structures.
For larger renovations, councilors agreed to pursue county TAP funds and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) opportunities; staff will gather contractor quotes for partitions, vanities and accessible fixtures to strengthen grant applications. The council emphasized that pursuing ADA-related improvements would help prioritize the projects in competitive grant scoring.
Other park maintenance items included purchasing spare sprinklers and blower/trimmer equipment for grounds upkeep, exploring options for power-washing pavilion tables, and marking and tracking town equipment kept in the pump/storage building. Members asked staff to provide cost estimates for needed items and to include park-related match funds in the capital planning discussion.
The council directed that staff collect quotes and prepare grant-supporting documentation for the TAP/CDBG cycle opening in June and to return with a scope and budget for formal consideration.
