Sunset City certifies election results, approves police equipment voucher and hears department updates

The Sunset City Council, meeting Nov. 18 in the council chambers, certified the results of the November general election and handled a set of routine administrative and departmental items.
Acting as the board of canvassers, the council adopted Resolution 2025-19 to certify the official election returns. Office manager Nicole said the official results showed 2,265 registered voters and 731 ballots cast, for a turnout of 32.27%. She read vote totals aloud for several races, including a reading of 403 votes for "Scott s Wiggles" and 419 votes for Nancy Greco Spallings in the mayoral tally. Council Member Wrigley moved to approve the canvass and Council Member Carlson seconded; the resolution passed on a roll-call vote by all members present.
On routine business the council approved a voucher for $16,294.43 to Premier Installation for equipment for a 2026 police Dodge Durango. Council Member Ridley moved and Council Member Carlson seconded; the motion was approved unanimously after council members asked staff to confirm vehicle and invoice details.
Public works staff reported preparatory work for sidewalk repairs and a contractor survey that identified roughly 400 items needing repair and about 47 replacements; the contractor expects to start in December and continue into January. Staff noted asphalt placement timelines are weather-dependent and may require cold patching until hot mix is available. The council also heard from the fire district: Chief Beecraft reported last month’s responses included 36 medical calls and nine fire-related responses, noted recent retirements and promotions, and said the district expects delivery of a 107-foot aerial ladder truck next August as part of the capital improvements plan.
The office manager said the city is close to switching from postcards to mailed bills, with vendor work ongoing and an implementation target of January; she also announced a new hire, Katie, who will start Dec. 1. Council members reported on community events, including a veterans program and an Agent Orange monument dedication that drew strong attendance, and discussed an upcoming bingo/warm-clothing drive and raffle to stock the community "blessing box."
Near the end of the meeting the council voted to take a brief recess and move into a closed session; Council Member Wrigley moved to close the meeting and Council Member Bartley seconded; the motion carried.
