Board approves certification funding after EL numbers pass state threshold

Chris Rice, director of early learning, told the board that under Illinois rules a district with 200 or more English-learner students must designate a person who meets ISBE's requirements to oversee EL programs. CCSD 118 exceeded that 200-student enrollment threshold this school year.
Rice said the Title I grants coordinator, Brandon Kaczewski, must complete two certification courses to keep the district in compliance with ISBE administrative rules. He requested that the board approve payment for the courses from the district's teacher vacancy grant at an approximate cost of $1,125; the board approved the request by roll call, 6-0.
"State law," Rice said when asked, "Yes," confirming the district must comply with the requirement.
