Kaneland trustees hear update from local fire chief on ambulance, EMT training and response times

The Kaneland CUSD 302 Board of Education received an informational briefing from Chief Tyndall of the local fire protection district on the status of a donated ambulance, equipment donations and plans for expanded emergency training.
Chief Tyndall told the board the ambulance has been striped and outfitted with donated equipment and that district personnel have been training since the vehicle’s delivery. He described a cardiac monitor donation and, as stated in the transcript, called it a "$5,060,000 dollar piece of equipment," noting the district is not yet running the device at full capability but will be able to use it for SpO2, blood pressure, pulse ox and EKG rhythms.
On staffing, Chief Tyndall said the district is trialing daytime staffing at the station and that, "since we've started the staffing, the guys have bought into it a lot" and that the change has decreased response times by approximately three minutes in the data he showed the board. He said the district is staffed during daytime hours (discussed in the meeting as roughly 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and that crews have continued training into the evenings.
Chief Tyndall also described a planned EMT course, saying: "EMT course will be starting, December 2. We'll have it done by March 1." He said the district will open the class to neighboring departments and that the program is intended to create a pipeline toward paramedic training.
The chief described interagency cooperation around larger drills and a multi-department exercise scheduled at the Fox Valley Career Center, and urged that community members not be alarmed if they see staged activity during the drill date. He said final in-service approval for the ambulance depends on state inspection once outstanding paperwork is completed.
The presentation was informational; the board did not take action on the items.
