District communications director outlines 'What Matters Most' tour with language access and community outreach

Carrie Campbell, the district's executive director of communications and engagement, briefed the board on the "What Matters Most" tour, a series of outreach meetings intended to gather priorities from families, educators and community partners as Superintendent Irish completes entry planning.
"The 'What Matters Most' tour is focused on three stakeholder groups: families and broad community, staff and students, and our partners, civic leaders," Campbell said, and described a mix of one-on-one meetings and larger convenings. She said the tour will include events held in community spaces and that the district will offer language and accessibility supports.
"We're going to provide Portuguese and Spanish and ASL interpretation at all of them so that, folks know right upfront what will be provided," Campbell said, signaling an emphasis on lowering barriers to participation.
Board members welcomed the plan to go "where people are" instead of asking residents to come to the administration center. Director Tran and others suggested attending large community gatherings — for example cultural festivals and faith-based congregations — and asked that outreach plan for the diversity within the Asian and Pacific Islander communities and for Spanish-speaking families.
Campbell said staff are still shaping the outreach list and invited community groups to request visits that host Superintendent Irish. She also said the tour will culminate in a report back to the community summarizing gathered priorities and values.
The board did not take action on the tour during the meeting; directors encouraged staff to continue planning and to find convening partners for communities that do not have a single representative organization.
