Council approves $30,000 referral to Thurston County Food Bank amid concerns about short-term demand

The Olympia City Council voted to contract $30,000 to the Thurston County Food Bank after members heard testimony about surging demand and recent federal program interruptions.
Councilmember Cooper, prime sponsor of the referral, said local lifts in demand and reductions in regional food bank resources left the community in need of immediate assistance. "I move that the city of Olympia contract with the food bank to get $30,000 of food out into our community," Cooper said as he offered the motion.
Council discussion acknowledged that the one-time allocation would not solve systemic food-security problems, and members urged longer-term planning. Councilmember Madrone and others recommended a future retreat discussion about developing a more resilient local food system. Mayor Pro Tem Nguyen said the council’s $15,000 in council-goal funds plus a $15,000 contingency contribution from the city manager were appropriate to meet the referral total.
The motion passed by voice vote. Staff will coordinate the contract and distribution with the Thurston County Food Bank.
