Bixby alternative center reports enrollment gains; district recognizes staff contributions

Bixby — At the Sept. 12 Bixby Board of Education meeting, the district highlighted staff and program work as the school year settled in and welcomed an update from the Bixby Alternative Center.
Mr. Coleman, who manages the alternative center, told trustees the program serves 79 students and uses a 15‑to‑1 student‑teacher ratio required by state rules. He said 65% of students at the center hold jobs, several students reengaged after dropping out, and the center offers hybrid scheduling with both online and in‑person options. Coleman outlined plans for expanded life‑skills instruction, monthly graduation check‑ins, and efforts to seek additional full‑time teacher positions (FTEs) to better serve lower‑grade students.
The board also presented a Spartan Spirit award to Jerry Burton, the district’s shipping and receiving coordinator, for sustained service in handling incoming materials and logistics. Superintendent remarks thanked community partners — New Beginnings Church, downtown Bixby Church of Christ and Life Church at Bixby — for hosting and supporting welcome‑back events and staff meals.
Superintendent Miller highlighted district academic successes including six National Merit semifinalists (average ACT of 35) and previewed family engagement opportunities such as the 'Spartan U' series and a distance‑learning practice day on Sept. 27.
The board asked for continued updates on alternative center staffing and program metrics, and trustees praised community partnerships supporting staff and students.
