Issaquah council appoints Paul Adair to fill vacant Position No. 2 after candidate interviews

The Issaquah City Council interviewed four finalists for the vacancy in Council Position No. 2 on Jan. 20 and unanimously appointed Paul Adair to the seat after executive session.
The council conducted timed, five‑question interviews of the four finalists (20 minutes each) as part of a process that sought to prevent candidates from hearing questions in advance. Candidates were asked about gaps in their knowledge, housing and affordability, traffic and mobility priorities, how they would spend a hypothetical $1,000,000 for a community project, and why the council should appoint them. Each candidate answered questions from rotating council members.
After the interviews, the council recessed to an executive session under RCW 42.30.110(1)(h) to review qualifications. When the council returned to open session, Council Member Walsh nominated Paul Adair; the nomination was seconded and passed unanimously. Paul Adair was sworn into Council Position No. 2 and immediately took his place on the dais.
Council then announced 2026 committee appointments and approved an exception to Council rules allowing a member of council leadership to serve on two standing committees for 2026. The council adjourned at 10:04 p.m.
