Captain Clay Nelson honored with Utah supervisory fire officer designation

Captain Clay Nelson was presented with the Utah supervisory fire officer designation during the Syracuse City Council meeting. Chief Byington and other city leaders praised Nelson’s hundreds of hours of training, education and experience required to meet the designation criteria adopted from the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Utah Commission on Fire Officer Designation.
Chief Byington noted the designation is rare in Utah — he estimated roughly 100 people statewide have it — and that the department presented Nelson with a framed plaque and a uniform pen to recognize the achievement. Council members thanked the chief and congratulated Nelson.
The recognition was a ceremonial item on the agenda and did not require council action or funding changes.
