Public Works Director Chris Bennett updated the Select Board on the new cemetery off Nurse Street and showed renderings of a proposed veterans memorial developed in collaboration with the Trustees of Soldiers Memorials. Bennett said drainage and other site work are complete and that the town expects to open lots for sale either later this year or in 2025.
Trustees chair Mark Brady described the memorial as polished black granite featuring seals for six military services and a separate flagpole; he praised collaboration with the DPW and noted input from the high school graphic arts department, whose student designs strongly influenced the final commercial design. Former trustee **** Bassler also outlined the committee's two-and-a-half-year involvement and credited past committee members for advancing the project.
Staff said the memorial cost will require refining cost estimates and that remaining entrance and signage work will be contracted; funding for the memorial was included in earlier cemetery borrowing approved at town meeting. The board discussed naming the cemetery (staff currently using "Nurse Street Cemetery" informally) and confirmed the board retains ultimate authority to adopt a formal name before sales begin.
