Planning board adopts revised DRB sign guidelines to simplify permitting

The Town of Westborough Planning Board voted July 16 to adopt revised signage design guidelines prepared by the Design Review Board (DRB) that are intended to streamline and clarify the process for business owners and landlords seeking sign approvals.
Michael Halley, chair of the DRB, said the updated document includes illustrations, photographic examples of recently approved signs, materials guidance, and accessory-sign rules tailored for Westborough’s historic downtown. "We just want it to be an easier process so people don't dread coming in front of us and actually find it to be a good experience," Halley said during his presentation.
Board members praised the visual approach. Chair Hazel Nurse commented that the illustrations make a big difference for applicants, citing her experience on the historical commission and the design review board.
The board closed the public hearing on the revised guidelines, then moved and voted to adopt the DRB sign guidelines dated May 31, 2024, replacing the current sign guidance. The planner confirmed that the related application is available online through PermitPro and may be submitted electronically or scanned and attached if filled out by hand.
The revised guidelines aim to reduce confusion about allowable sign types, illumination, materials and storefront signage, while preserving compliance with the Westborough zoning bylaw. The planning office will post the adopted guidelines and update application instructions.
