The Economic Development Committee agreed to form a small subcommittee to finalize plans for the town’s annual year-in-review awards breakfast, including the keynote speaker, venue and the awards process.
Committee members debated hosting the event at the DoubleTree Hotel — which committee members said looks more formal and can hold larger crowds — or at the town’s Great Hall, which provides the town more direct control over logistics and cost. Given current time constraints for securing a speaker and producing Westboro TV recipient videos, multiple members recommended holding the event at the Great Hall this year and focusing on elevating the program there. The chair asked the subcommittee (Dave, Karen and another member) to meet and return recommendations to the full committee.
Members emphasized that the keynote speaker should drive the date and venue. The committee discussed outreach to higher-profile speakers, including the lieutenant governor and regional officials; staff indicated they will try for an April date to improve video and drone footage for Westboro TV and to avoid school vacation weeks. The EDC will aim to secure a speaker, finalize the list of awards (committee discussed keeping roughly 6–8 awards and retaining some consistent categories like civic-pride and hall-of-fame), and confirm which awards will be decided by public vote versus committee selection.
The subcommittee will return recommendations at the next meeting, and staff will provide materials and schedules to Westboro TV and other partners. No formal vote on the venue or speaker occurred at this meeting.
