Bedford Public Library reports steady growth, program expansion and facility needs

At the Oct. 22 Bedford Town Council meeting, Library Director Miriam Johnson and Trustee Lee Joyce updated the council on annual library operations, program growth and facility needs. Johnson said overall circulation was up slightly over last year, with digital audio formats showing the fastest growth, and she described strong attendance for adult, teen and children's programs.

Highlights included continued demand for museum passes paid for with private donations (about $7,500 annually) and an active "library of things" offering tools and specialty equipment. The library reported roughly 10,000 monthly visits and expanded study-room use with new sound-dampening study pods.

Johnson and Joyce said the library building will mark its 30th anniversary soon. Planned improvements include front-entry ADA access upgrades, replacement/maintenance of aging trees, and a redesign of bathroom facilities to add more accessible/unisex options — in part to better accommodate caregivers of different genders. They said the library will engage a consultant to study space reconfiguration to meet growing program demands, especially for children's programming that has nearly outgrown its area.

Councilors asked about collaboration with other libraries and long-range planning; Johnson noted active participation in the state consortium and work at the statewide level to interpret House Bill 273 on privacy and children's confidentiality. The council welcomed a future strategic report on library plans and thanked staff and volunteers for their work.
