Bedford approves $437,084.45 ALS medical equipment contract with Stryker

Fire and EMS leaders told the council that several pieces of Advanced Life Support (ALS) medical and transport equipment had reached or exceeded expected service life and recommended awarding the contract to Stryker Sales LLC.
Mike Tierney, captain of EMS in training for the fire department, said the department compared vendor proposals and found Stryker offered equipment plus stretcher/power‑load systems, stair chairs and service plans. While a ZOLL proposal was about $73,000 higher, Stryker’s integrated product and service package and trade‑in allowances led staff to recommend Stryker. The proposal included accepting the department’s five cardiac monitors and 18 AEDs in trade, an $80,000 down payment this year and five additional interest‑free payments to spread cost control over the next five years.
Councilor Beck moved to approve the contract and associated waiver to Stryker Sales LLC in the amount of $437,084.45 and authorize the town manager to execute the documents. The council voted 7–0 to approve the contract.
Management noted the purchase reduces the planned CIP request for next year by covering more equipment upfront and spreading payments over time; staff included non‑appropriation language in the draft contract to protect the town if funding becomes unavailable in later years.
