Committee advances reengage grant to help adults return to college after a gap

House Bill 125, presented by Representative Collins, would convert an existing reengage program into a grant that helps former students return to postsecondary education and strengthen the workforce. "This bill would give them assistance to come back if they've had a 2 year gap," Collins said.
Collins explained the bill removes prior age limitations tied to when the gap occurred and clarifies eligibility: generally a person would be eligible if they are at least 22 years old and have been out of a program for two years. The sponsor said the goal is to increase workforce participation by enabling students who did not complete an associate or baccalaureate degree to reengage with education.
Committee members did not raise substantive objections; the motion to report HB 125 favorably was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The clerk noted the favorable report and the bill will move to the next legislative step.
