Committee advances bill altering trustee rules and president requirement at University of Montevallo

The Education Policy Committee voted to give House Bill 164 a favorable report after Representative Ellis summarized the university’s requested changes to its governance rules.
"HB 164 simply removes the requirement for the University of Montevallo that the president be an educator by trade," Representative Ellis said, and adds other technical changes, including shortening trustee term limits from 12 to 8 years and changing the quorum requirement from five to six members. He told the committee that the university board of trustees approved the requests.
Committee members asked no substantive questions about funding or operational impacts during the hearing. The committee moved and approved a favorable report by voice vote.
The bill will move forward in the legislative process to the next House stage.
