Youth 4-H project wins council approval for Purple Martin nesting racks at city site

Kirchner said she secured a small grant from the Mayor O'Donnell Society and 4-H leaders to purchase the 18-gourd rack with predator guards and that club members would conduct weekly monitoring, data collection and reporting to the Purple Martin Conservation Association.
Council asked about maintenance and long-term stewardship; Kirchner said the 4-H club and volunteers would maintain the racks and take the houses down when birds migrate. Council praised the youth presentation and moved to approve site number 1 as recommended by the presenter; the motion carried by voice vote.
Staff and the presenter agreed to follow city permitting procedures and coordinate installation logistics and maintenance responsibilities.
